A food allergy is the body’s immune system reacting abnormally to food or drink consumed. The FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education) estimates that 15 million Americans suffer from allergic reactions to food or drink and one out of every thirteen children in the U.S. live with food allergies. These allergies affect the skin, respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract or cardiovascular systems. There are some foods which trigger reactions stronger than others. Also when on a diet routine you should find out all the needed information so that you can learn how to lose weight successfully while being safe. Below are eight of those foods you should be aware of :

* Wheat
* Soy
* Cow milk
* Shellfish
* Peanuts
* Fish
* Tree nuts

Reactions caused by allergies

The reactions one suffers vary from mild to severe. They may also be immediate upon consumption or take several hours to develop. An immune system can react to a small amount of allergen and can often be life threatening. Reactions to the respiratory system can be especially dangerous. People who suffer from asthma have an even greater risk of a fatal allergic reaction to food. Mild symptoms may include:
* Stuffy or runny nose
* Rash
* Stomach cramps
* Diarrhea
* Itchy, watery eyes
* Sneezing
* Swelling
Severe symptoms may include:
* Hives
* Dizziness or faintness
* Vomiting or nausea
* Difficulty breathing
* Swelling of lips, tongue or throat

Allergic reactions to eggs

Children are more susceptible to egg allergies. While some may outgrow the allergy others remain allergic to eggs their entire life. There are some who are only allergic to the yolk, some only to the whites and some to both. There is a certain protein in eggs that cause these reactions.

Allergic reaction to peanuts

One allergy that children seldom outgrow is one to peanuts. This allergy usually becomes a lifelong disorder and can be potentially dangerous. Peanuts are a common ingredient used in many snack foods, oils, candies and more and make the potential risk of coming into contact with them that much more likely. Anaphylaxis (restricted breathing) is rare; but can be a result of a person who is allergic to peanuts coming into contact with them. This possible reaction requires one who is severely allergic to carry an EpiPen with them at all times to administer a shot of epinephrine if a reaction starts to occur. If the EpiPen is necessary, the person should be watched for several hours to make sure reaction symptoms don’t return.

Allergic reaction to milk

Whey or casein is a protein found in cow’s milk and is responsible for many allergic reactions. This is different than lactose intolerance. Studies have found children who develop a reaction to cow milk are much more likely to develop allergies to; soy, peanuts and eggs. They have also been found to develop other diseases such as; eczema, asthma or allergic rhinitis.

How allergies are diagnosed

Depending on how severe one’s reactions are will determine the diagnosis. If the symptoms are mild then the doctor will probably recommend a food diary be kept to list all foods consumed to find which one is causing the reaction. If the symptoms are severe; skin or blood tests may be needed to find which one is causing the reaction.

Avoidance is the best practice once a food source for reactions is identified. When purchasing food from restaurants or grocery stores you will need to be aware of all ingredients used. Mild symptoms may respond to over-the-counter antihistamines; while more severe may respond to steroid medications, but these could also cause serious side-effects.

Food Allergies Getting Worse

food allergiesOver 50 million Americans currently suffer with some form of food allergy, be it a mild lactose intolerance to a serious seafood allergy. Approximately 4-6% of children and 4% of adults are affected to some extent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Allergies most commonly develop in infancy and young childhood, but can manifest any time, even in foods you have eaten for years.
Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system, misidentifying it as a danger and activating an immune response totally out of proportion to the perceived threat.

Allergies can be genetic, and there’s research indicating that the younger siblings of children with peanut allergies may be at much higher risk or even guaranteed to have a peanut allergy themselves, but so far, there are no hard and fast rules to predict who will have an allergy, and to what. Allergies may also become more severe as a person ages; something that caused minimal or no allergic response may eventually cause a severe reaction. Allergic responses can range from mild to very severe, even life threatening. The mildest responses include indigestion, stomach cramps or vomiting, and perhaps a rash, with a more severe version being hives, coughing or wheezing, swelling of the tongue, all the way up to potentially life threatening anaphylaxis, which can cause the throat to swell shut, blood pressure to drop dangerously, and can even cause heart failure.
Eight foods make up over 90% of all allergic reactions: milk, tree nuts, peanuts, eggs, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat, although anything can be an allergen. Seeds, particularly mustard and sesame, are also major allergens, particularly in some geographic regions.
The most effective treatment for allergies is to simply avoid the food in question. For children, the most common triggers are milk, eggs, and peanuts, and symptoms may manifest the very first time the child is exposed to these foods. For adults, peanuts and tree nuts, fish and shellfish, and oral allergies to fruit and vegetable pollen are the most common. However, for oral allergies, these foods can be consumed without issue if the food is heated to destroy the pollen that is causing an itchy mouth and swollen tongue, which are classic signs of oral allergy.
There are several tests allergists can use to determine if you allergic and to what specifically, by testing for certain food-specific antibodies in your blood. The first and most common is the skin prick test, in which the allergist administers a small amount of a liquid containing the potential allergen just under the skin to see if a wheal, or small bump, develops. This test is generally very accurate, although the testing process may be slightly uncomfortable, and provide results within about 20 minutes. Blood tests may also be administered to look for the antibodies, although these tests take about a week to process and are prone to being less accurate.

The most accurate test is the food challenge test, in which patients are fed small amounts of suspected trigger foods under strict medical supervision to determine if a reaction occurs. This test is especially useful if blood and skin tests were inconclusive. If you suspect you or a family member may have a food allergy, do your best to see an allergist right away. Reactions can escalate with each successive exposure to a trigger food, and it may become life threatening. Until then, avoid the food if possible and/or keep Benadryl on hand to help deal with any allergic reactions.

Finding the perfect diet for children with food allergies can be a challenge. There are going to be restrictions for them that you are going to have a hard time dealing with. There are going to be things that they can’t eat that you grew up eating, and there are going to be some drastic changes for you to make. There are going to be many challenges for you ahead, but don’t give up. Once you have discovered some foods that your child can still eat, everything will get much easier.

Find Some New Foods For Your Child
Children with food allergies don’t offer you as many food options as you would have if they did not have allergies, but that does not mean that you can’t still have variety. What you are going to need to do is to find some foods that your child can eat. If they are allergic to gluten, then find some noodle and bread substitutes that they enjoy. If they are allergic to corn then element everything with that ingredient, but also find some things that you can buy that will go in place of it. Finding out that your child has a food allergy does not mean that their diet has to be boring. Once you have found some new foods for them to eat their diet will be just as exciting as ever.

Don’t Let Yourself Get Discouraged
There will be times when you feel that there is nothing on the planet that your child can eat, but do not let yourself get discouraged. Feeling down about everything will only make the situation harder on yourself. Try to maintain a positive outlook and you and your child will both benefit from that. Spend your time searching for things that your child can eat rather than things that he or she cannot eat. Spend your time trying out new foods and making a game of it. You and your child will both take this much easier if you do not let yourself get discouraged about this.

When your child has allergies, it is important that before you let him or her eat anything, that you know the exact ingredients that it contains. Check every label before you let your child consume something. When you make sure to do this you can know that your child will be safe, and you will be able to feel much more relaxed because of it.

There is a lot of stress that comes with a food allergy, but there can be joy in it, too. If you follow the guidelines above you and your child will be able to do this together without getting too overwhelmed. Just remember to take this one day at a time. As with anything in life, that is all that you can do. Keeping your child safe is all that you can do, and it is good if you can have a positive outlook as you do that.
